There is a big difference between a web presence and a fully interactive website. Whilst a web presence, such as one based on WordPress will provide contact details and an overview of your company’s activities as a stand- alone package it will do little to promote your business or assist with the acquisition of new clients.
If you only want a website to signpost potential customers to you then an off the shelf WordPress website may be more than adequate. There are lots of websites which offer a free listing service for businesses and this may be sufficient to promote your business, especially if you are a one-man band e. g. a self-employed electrician, and wish to advertise the service in a small geographical area.
However for others a fully functional website is an essential business tool, especially if your market is not restricted by geographical boundaries. Your website should capture the essence of your business and promote the brand. It should also work regardless of the operating system or browser used and be equally appealing whether it is being viewed on a PC or a hand-held device such as an I-pad or a mobile phone. The website should also work in terms of search engine optimisation (SEO) so that it appears high up on the list of pages generated when an internet search is conducted.
